Thomas Cass is elected to the Boston School Committee.
December 12, 1859
The first Irish-Catholic elected to the Boston School Committee, Cass was formerly the commander of the Columbian Guard and later of the Ninth Massachusetts (“Irish Ninth”) Regiment. According to Robert Allison, Cass might have become mayor of Boston had he not been mortally wounded in the Battle of Malvern Hill during the Civil War.
